Research shows that such constructs as self-efficacy, academic self-concept, stereotype threat, attibutional style, and achievement goal orientation can affect our performance and our desire to persist in executing a task. I share my own story of overcoming the challenges of being a first-generation college student with little interest or motivation to succeed academically to serving as an administrator of honors programs at five post-secondary institutions and pursuing my goal of attaining a Ph.D. in Educational Psychology.
